EFA'S

 


What are EFA’s? Essential fatty acids are exactly that, essential lipids (fat) are the building block of all membranes, cholesterol, and hormones to name just a few bodily functions of these “must have” compounds. In addition, they are anti-inflammatory and I bet that the closer we look at these fats, the more benefits we discover.
Fish Om 3’s

Fish Oil consists of many lipids but DHA and EPA appear to give the greatest health benefits. Flaxseed oil also has Omega 3 but Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA), the Omega 3 found in flax, differs from fish oil omega 3. Our body can change the flax seed oil omega 3 (ALA) into fish oil omega 3 (DHA & EPA) but conversion is limited and by middle-age most people lose the ability to do this. DHA is a must for mental health, a large part of your brain are insulators surrounding all your nerves and these insulators made in large part of DHA. Depression and ADD/ADHD can improve dramatically with DHA supplementation and pregnant women who take DHA during pregnancy have babies that have consistently shown improved cognitive function and motor skills over babies from women who did not supplement with DHA. In addition, women who used DHA were far less likely to suffer from post-partum depression.

EPA has been shown to improve cholesterol by raising levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and decreasing bad cholesterol (LDL), which is great but when coupled with EPA’s anti- inflammatory properties, there are marked improvements in vascular health.

So keep those Omega 3’s highly on your wellness list and drop by with any questions and/or observations.
